I always think it’s a fun challenge to head to a new place and try to figure out what makes it tick when you aren’t afforded the luxury of spending a lot of time there. Places either give up their secrets easily or make you work for them. A Nebraska spring snow had gone through the day before, turning the roads to gumbo and throwing off the trip itinerary. I needed to travel those roads to get to this place. I needed for there not to be snow in the picture. Adaptability is king in the wilderness.
Protected Forever is a standard Bugle magazine feature. I was traveling through Nebraska when they had a parcel of land to feature, so we connected. Editors gave me the name of the place, the landowner and a paragraph of information. I came up with the trip arrangements, interviews, pre-trip Google Map scouting, photography and words.
What I did here: Reporting, writing, photography, mud mucking
