These suckers are cute. And fierce. Nothing like their domesticated kin that I had as pets ages ago. This was one of the first major feature pieces I wrote as the editor of Wyoming Wildlife magazine. I was new to the state, still unpacking boxes in a new house, and very much in discovery mode. Being able to tag along on one of the state’s greatest conservation success stories anchored me quickly to the wide open spaces, the people found where I figured civilization would end, and the mission of the agency where I’d spend the next three years telling stories. All the feels.
